Many of the homes we manage are pet-friendly, but the exact limits can depend on the property owner, the home, an HOA or community association, and sometimes insurance. Start With Approval Before the Pet Comes Home
It is much easier to sort out the paperwork before you have already adopted the dog, brought home the kitten, or picked up the rabbit. The avoidable friction we see is usually not the pet itself. It is finding out afterward that a particular property has a size, number, species, HOA, or insurance restriction that should have been checked first.

One terminology note: this guide is about ordinary pets. Assistance animals use a different screening and verification process, so they are handled separately from ordinary pet-policy questions.
Dog Parks and Pet-Friendly Walks Around the Area
If your dog needs room to run, there are several useful options across the area. Some localities have designated off-leash dog parks, while Petersburg National Battlefield offers miles of pet-friendly trails for a leashed walk. Always check the posted rules wherever you go.

- Henrico: Dorey Park and Short Pump Park have designated off-leash dog areas, including separate spaces for smaller and larger dogs. Henrico summarizes its park rules on the Park Tips page.
- Chesterfield: Ruff House Dog Park at Rockwood Park, Chester Dog Park at Goyne Park, and Clover Hill Dog Park are the county's listed off-leash facilities. The county's Parks and Facilities page has locations and rules.
- Hanover: Taylor Dog Park in Ashland and Pole Green Dog Park in Mechanicsville have fenced dog areas and other dog-park amenities. Hanover posts the details on its Dog Parks page.
- Petersburg: Petersburg National Battlefield has miles of nature trails open to pets. Dogs must stay on a leash no longer than six feet, and owners must collect and remove pet waste. It is a great local option when you want a real walk rather than an off-leash run.
Have a Vet Plan Before You Need One
Life is easier when you already know where you would go for routine care and where you would go in an emergency. The right veterinarian depends on where you live, appointment availability, your pet's species, and the type of care you need. A few useful starting points across our service area are:

- Richmond SPCA's Susan M. Markel Veterinary Hospital, which provides reduced-cost outpatient veterinary care and specifically notes that it is not an emergency facility.
- Crater Road Veterinary Hospital, a full-service veterinary hospital at 464 S. Crater Road in Petersburg that serves Petersburg and the Tri-Cities.
- Virginia Veterinary Centers, which provides emergency care in the region, including a Short Pump location listed as open 24/7/365.

Pet Rules Change Across the Service Area
Local pet rules are one reason a single set of "RVA rules" can be misleading. Your lease and community rules still matter, but the city or county where you live can add its own licensing, control, and park requirements.

Make Pet-Friendly Rental Life Easier at Home
Most pet-friendly habits are simple. Keep a towel or washable mat near the door for muddy walks. Give cats a scratching surface where they naturally want to scratch. Use washable rugs or throws in the spots your pet uses most. Pick up waste promptly outdoors, and clean indoor accidents quickly with a pet-safe product.
