A door that sticks, rubs, will not latch, slides poorly, or closes too fast can often be narrowed down with a few simple checks. Start with the type of door and exactly where normal movement stops.
If a Hinged Door Sticks, Rubs, or Sags
Open and close the door gently and look for an obvious rug, doorstop, threshold debris, or other loose object interfering with it.
If an ordinary exposed hinge screw is visibly loose, gently tighten it with the correct screwdriver. Tighten a little at a time and retest the door.
Stop if the screw is stripped, the hinge or frame is damaged, or the next step would require removing the hinge, installing oversized or longer fasteners, sanding or planing the door, or forcing the frame into position.
If the Door Closes but Will Not Latch or Lock
Notice whether gentle normal pressure changes the latch or deadbolt behavior. If the lock works normally with the door open but binds after the door closes, include that observation when you report it.

If a Sliding Patio Door Is Hard to Move
Vacuum or wipe away loose dirt, leaves, pet hair, small stones, and other debris from the accessible track. Then test the door gently.
If the panel still needs substantial force, scrapes heavily, looks crooked, drops, or feels loose, stop. Do not remove the panel or begin adjusting its rollers.
If a Storm Door Closes Too Fast, Too Slowly, or Will Not Close
First make sure the normal hold-open button, clip, or washer is not engaged.
Many pneumatic storm-door closers have an ordinary speed-adjustment screw or knob. LARSON directs users to make small adjustments, generally about one-quarter turn at a time, then test the door.
Turn the normal adjustment only as directed for the installed closer. Some two-closer systems are adjusted one closer at a time. Hidden closer systems can use a different procedure, so identify the model rather than transferring the pneumatic-closer method.
Stop if the closer or bracket is broken, pulling away from the door, or the next step requires changing the mounting location.
If Air or Rain Is Coming Through the Door
A visible gap, damaged weatherstripping, failed sweep, or door that no longer meets its frame normally is worth reporting if it continues.
If rainwater is entering, move belongings away from the area and wipe or contain accessible water when safe. Include photographs showing where the water appears.
If the Door Problem Continues
Submit a request through the PMI James River resident portal. Include the door type, where it rubs or sticks, whether it closes fully, whether it latches and locks, what simple adjustment or cleaning you tried, and whether weather is entering.
