A mechanical lock problem can be a lost-key lockout, a key that will not turn, a key stuck in the cylinder, a deadbolt that binds, or a knob or lever that no longer moves the latch normally.
If the problem is a keypad, electronic deadbolt, or app-controlled lock, use our Smart & Electronic Lock Problems guide instead.
If You Are Locked Out
Check whether another authorized occupant has a working key or whether another normal authorized entrance is available. Do not force a door or window and do not attempt to pick the lock.
If you need PMI James River to coordinate access, contact us so the property and authorized resident can be verified.
If the Key Will Not Insert or Turn
Make sure you have the correct key and that it is fully inserted in its normal orientation. If another authorized copy of the same key is available, try it gently. That can help separate a damaged-key problem from a lock that is binding.
Do not keep twisting a key that starts to bend.
If the Key Is Stuck in the Deadbolt
Return the key gently to the normal position where that lock usually allows key removal, then pull it straight out without twisting or forcing it.
Stop if the key bends, the cylinder moves abnormally, or normal gentle pressure will not release it. Do not use pliers, lock-picking tools, extraction tools, or an unidentified lubricant.
If the Deadbolt or Latch Works With the Door Open but Not Closed
If you are already inside and can safely test the door, operate the deadbolt or latch once with the door open and once with it closed.
If it moves normally while open but binds only when the door is closed, the door and frame alignment may be involved. Use our Door Problems guide if the door is also rubbing, sagging, or failing to close normally.
If a Knob or Lever Is Loose
If the exact hardware has an obvious exposed set screw or mounting screw, ordinary gentle hand-tightening with the correct screwdriver can be reasonable. Tighten only enough to make the hardware secure again.
Stop if the next step requires removing trim, reaching hidden fasteners, taking the lock apart, rekeying it, moving the strike plate, or using unusual force.
If the Problem Continues
Submit a request through the PMI James River resident portal. Include which door is affected, whether the key inserts and turns, whether the latch or deadbolt moves, whether operation changes with the door open, and whether the home can currently be secured.
